This day 23 years ago, Mankind defeated Rock to win the WWE Title, which turned to be one of the greatest moments in WWE history. The match was recorded on December 29, 1998, which was aired on January 4, 1999.

Mankind set Shane McMahon in a heartbreaking submission hold earlier in the night, forcing Vince McMahon to award him a WWE title shot against The Rock.

WCW Nitro was a live exhibit opposite RAW, which was recorded every week. WCW President Eric Bishoff was keen on improving the quality of WCW. One of the tactics he followed was he provided RAW results beforehand every week. This cunning trick worked to a certain extent, but it went laboriously against a prime night.

The Rock vs Mankind WWE Championship on RAW

The day changed the course of WWE history, WCW announcer Tony made the following call during WCW Nitro, while it was up against a recorded RAW on January 4, 1999:

“Fans, if you’re even thinking about changing the channel to our competition, fans, do not. We understand that Mick Foley, who wrestled here one time as Cactus Jack, is going to win their world title. Ha! That’s gonna put some butts in the seats.”

The above call went against WCW Nitro, and more than half a million fans switched to RAW to watch how Mankind won the WWE Championship from the Rock. Stone Cold interfered and helped Mankind win the WWE Title during the match. This was a significant turning point in the game. Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash competed for the WCW title on the same day. The game started, and the WCW legends teased an intense collision for some time. Hulk Hogan then pinned Kevin Nash and celebrated the great victory.
