The name ‘Washington Sundar’ has become quite famous in the past couple of days and his cricketing skills have made people call him the ‘Silent Hero’ of team India. Sundar played his debut match against Australia at the Gabba, Brisbane. He unleashed his batting potential when team India was in trouble at 161 for 5 wickets loss.
The young cricketer exhibited his excellent batting side by scoring 62 runs in the first innings. This was important for team India as they were chasing a crucial target of 328 runs against Australia. His magnificent six pressurized the opponent at that moment.
It was a surprise package when the left-handed batsman was able to bowl off spinner and pick up three wickets in his debut match. He picked up an important wicket in the second innings. The 21-year-old ended his debut series by contributing a notable batting side along with 4 wickets in bowling.

On the fourth test in Brisbane, one person from Chennai became very famous. Yes, it was Washington’s father, M Sundar who became the talk of the town as he expressed his disappointment when his son missed to hit a century against Australia.
M Sundar revealed an interesting story about his son’s name which started trending at that time.
An ex-army officer named PD Washington lived two streets away from his house in Triplicane, Chennai. Washington was very fond of cricket and would come to Marina ground to watch them play.
“I am a Hindu and come from a very humble family.
Two streets away from my home in Triplicane lived an ex-army man called PD Washington. Washington was extremely fond of cricket and would come to watch us play at the Marina ground. He took a liking for my game,” tells Washington Sundar’s father.
M Sundar was so poor that he couldn’t buy books, uniforms nor pay school fees for his studies. However, P.D. Washington rendered his financial support to Sundar.
Why did M Sundar Name him Washington Sundar?
After that incident, the former army officer became the role model for M Sundar. In 1999, when P.D. Washington left his last breath, M Sundar and his wife were gifted with a boy child. During that time, his wife went through a difficult time.
M Sundar decided to name his son Washington Sundar instead of ‘Srinivasan’. “As per the Hindu custom, I whispered a God’s name, ‘Srinivasan,’ in his ear. But I decided to name him Washington in memory of the man who had done so much for me.”
