10 Unbelievable Records in T20 Format

5 min read

The first international T20 fixture happened between Australia and New Zealand on February 17, 2005 at Eden Park, Auckland. The visitors won the game and since then, this cricket format started becoming famous and has become the most favorite game among viewers.

Though there is a separate fan base for ODI and Test cricket, few are in love with this brand of cricket as it has its own encounters. Unexpectedly, T20 cricket has evolved to become a blockbuster with lots of spectacular actions.

However, the format has its own unbreakable records which we could have never imagined. Here are top 10 records achieved in the shortest format:

1) Fastest Half Century by Yuvraj Singh

It was the time when the T20 format was hailed all over the globe. During the inaugural edition of T20 World Cup 2007, this happened in a match between India and England. Yuvaraj’s six sixes in Stuart Broad’s single over is still unbelievable news. Andrew Flintoff had a small tug-of-war with the left handed batsman before this incident and poor Stuart Broad became the bait.

The crowd went wild along with the commentator on air, Ravi Shastri. The team was in a crucial state to score more than 200 runs. Yuvraj came to the rescue as he scored his fastest half century in just 12 balls. Till date, Yuvraj holds the record of the fastest 50 in T20 cricket.

2) Best Economical Spell by Mohammad Irfan

In the history of T20 cricket, the tallest player, Mohammad Irfan bowled the most economical spell. In the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), he played for Barbados Tridents during last year August.

The Pakistani bowler bowled brilliantly for four overs by giving away just one run and picked up two wickets against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. He even took the wickets of two West Indies International players, Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis. Although the team lost that match, Irfan is the most economical bowler in Twenty 20 cricket.

3) Sri Lanka Destroying Kenya by 172 Runs

In the first edition of World Cup T20 2007, Kenya and Sri Lanka went on for a head to head clash at Johannesburg. Kenya planned to field first after winning the toss. The Sri Lankan skipper, Sanath Jayasuriya scored a quickie 88 runs at the strike rate of 200 which amplified the upcoming players Mahela Jayawardene and Jehan Mubarak as they scored 65 and 46 respectively.

Kenyan bowlers were exhausted as the Sri Lankan team scored 260 runs in 20 overs. Kenya were totally gone for 88 runs in 20 overs and lost the match by 172 runs. This game holds a record of a winning margin by runs.

4) Isuru Udana at Number 8 Scored 84 Runs against South Africa

Earlier this year, Sri Lanka was washed out back to back in three T20 match series against South Africa. However, the second fixture was an unforgettable game for the Sri Lankan bowler, Isuru Udana. Reeza Hendricks started off well by scoring 65 runs and with the support rendered from Rassie, Van Der Dussen and JP Duminy managed to put up 180 runs for 3 wickets loss.

Chasing a rigid target of 181 runs, Sri Lanka faced their worst nightmare as they lost 6 wickets at the initial stage scoring 62 runs at the mid stage. That’s when Isuru Udana landed in the pitch at number four and played a brilliant 84 runs game in just 48 deliveries. This included 6 sixes and 8 fours together. Despite nearing a century, Sri Lanka lost by 16 runs. This score by Udana is the highest by a batsman who has played at number 8 in T20 format till date.

5) Sunil Narine’s Maiden Super Over

West Indies spinner, Sunil Narine is the first bowler ever to bowl a maiden super over in the history of T20. This happened in a match between Red Steel and Guyana Amazon Warriors at the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2014. Both the teams were tied after their 20 overs game as they scored 118 runs and this led to super over.

The Warriors started the super over by batting first and set a target of 12 runs to the Steels. Sunil Narine was handed over the responsibility of thrashing the Steels.

During the high pressure game, Narine managed to bowl an entire over with dot balls to Nicholas Pooran and Ross Taylor and also picked up the wicket of Nicholas in the fifth delivery. However, till date this record is unbeatable.

6) Chris Gayle Smashed PWI by 175 run Knock

The Pune Warriors were devastated when Chris Gayle played an incredible game in IPL 2013. The leading wicket taker in Ranji trophy, Ishwar Pandey bowled his first over of the innings to Chris Gayle. From the very beginning, Gayle started to storm scoring 21 runs in his first over. Other bowlers like Ali Murtaza, Mitchell Marsh couldn’t take down this man.

Gayle ripped apart the opponent’s bowling strategy. In just 66 deliveries, Gayle storm scored 175 runs to put up a huge total of 263 runs for the RCB team with a loss of five wickets. However, the PWI lost the game by a mammoth 130 runs.

7) 17 Sixes by Gayle Storm in an Innings

In the same match against the Pune Warriors, Chris Gayle hit 102 out of 175 runs which went for sixers. The percentage of sixes is way beyond our imagination. The game was probably postponed since the ball boys were busy collecting the balls which went for sixes.

Most of the bowlers who bowled to Gayle scored an average of 15 runs per over. However, the Calypso King smacked the Pune Warriors with 17 sixes and 13 brutal fours which made the game even more interesting.

8) Fastest Century in T20 by Chris Gayle

The “Six Machine” hit an easy century in just 30 balls against the Pune Warriors which is still the fastest century hit in all the cricket formats. The unstoppable force of Gayle made the RCB to smash Pune.

He hit his half century in 17 deliveries and took some time to settle. But the upcoming 50 runs were scored within a blink of an eye. Gayle reached the three-digit number in just 13 balls after that and created a world record.

9) The Oldest Player in T20 – Ryan Campbell

Generally if a cricketer reaches an age of 44, they would probably retire. But it was totally a different scenario with Ryan Campbell. Ryan Campbell holds a unique record of playing his debut T20 match at the age of 44 for Hong Kong. In 2016, he played the world cup match against Zimbabwe at the Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium, Nagpur.

Unfortunately, Zimbabwe won the match against Hong Kong. Before playing for Hong Kong, he had played a few games for the Australian team as well. However, the Perth born cricketer is currently the head coach for the Netherlands cricket team.

10) MS Dhoni as a Captain in T20

None of us would have imagined that this long haired guy from Jharkhand would create a world record? MS Dhoni has been the captain for 266 T20 matches till date. This includes the Indian cricket team, Chennai Super Kings,  Rising Pune Supergiants in IPL, and Champions League as well.

However, it is to be noted that Dhoni will be leading the Chennai Super Kings team and this 266 figure might increase in the near future. Dhoni hails the crown as the most successful captain in T20 International games winning 41 fixtures out of 72 played.
